Explore new dimensions of oil painting in plein air by experimenting with the versatility of the palette knife. Using physical depth and texture, one can experience the full range of the beautiful medium of oil paint; translucency, transparency and fluidity; and the layering of tone on tone to create a sense of motion and depth. Marianne has been working in oils with palette knife for 29 years. Marianne’s love of nature and years of experience painting plein air on a lake in Canada in summer and winters on the Cape Ann coast have provided particular expertise into painting water’s texture, movement and refraction. Marianne will instruct students in mixing / handling paint with a knife and various palette knife techniques – as well as sharing her color theory – in a discussion and demonstration, and looks forward to devoting the body of the weekend working with individuals at their own pace to realize their goals in palette knife experimentation. There will be a brief and friendly critique at the conclusion of the second day. The workshop will be held outdoors – weather permitting.
All levels welcome. A list of suggested materials will be provided in advance.
